Alex attended the Norman High School Pom Clinic a week or so ago and got to cheer during the game and perform at halftime last Thursday night. She had a ball and the girls were adorable! Unless something changes...this is the high school she will attend, so she thought it was pretty cool!

I have been a very bad blogger this summer and for no real good reason other than I have let "life" get the best of me. Call it a "thrisis," Call it being a wife, daughter, mother, employee, etc...Call it Life. I have no real excuse.

We received the following email last night and I went to bed thinking about it and woke up today still thinking about it. I would like to share it with you. Sometimes things arrive just at the right time. For those of you who know Brett, know that he has been and continues to be an amazing person and friend.

My Bone Marrow Transplant Story – By Brett Dick

Some of you may know I recently went through a bone marrow transplant as a donor for a 12 year old boy with a rare disease called Hemophagicytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). Initially, I told only my immediate family because I didn't want it to be made into a big deal. However, I now realize how important it is for me to tell my story so that you will better understand the donor process and will see how easily you can also contribute.

In November of 2009, the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) was at our church campaigning for their cause and giving simple mouth swabs to those who wanted to apply to be a donor in their program. Along with the majority of my Sunday school class, I decided to fill out the paper work and become a donor. It took a whole 15 minutes!

Forgetting all about my signing up, I received a call about 8 weeks ago from Arlene, a representative for the NMDP. She told me they had found a possible match and asked if I would go to the Oklahoma Blood Institute and give samples for further testing. She told me there was still only on 8% chance a match would be made, and the odds were still stacked against me on being a good match.

About 2 weeks later, she called and told me I was a match, but more testing would be needed to make sure I was healthy enough to go through the procedure. Within a couple of days, I received a packet in the mail containing a CD that explained the process and surgical procedure and lots of literature about the NMDP. In addition, I was told my recipient was a 12 year old boy with HLH.

After setting up a date that was good for me, I went to the Presbyterian OU Health Center for an overview of the bone marrow transplant process, an explanation of the recipients' disease, an EKG, urinalysis, chest x-ray, more blood work and met the surgeon who again explained the transplant procedure. By the end of the day, the doctor determined I was healthy enough and it was time to sign the paperwork needed to move the procedure forward.

At this point, I was told by my signing the paperwork the recipient would be notified he had a donor; a date would be set for the transplant; and he would begin his chemotherapy. This meant if he didn't receive my bone marrow on the transplant date, he would die because his chemo dosages and their frequency would be ramped up until the day of his transplant. His white blood cells would be almost completely eliminated from his body, and only with the introduction of matching white cells would he be able to survive.

As I was signing my name, the full impact of what I was doing hit me pretty hard. I became very excited by realizing I could potentially save someone's life.

Some of you may wonder why I haven't said more about the recipient. It is because the NMDP only allows the donor and recipient to know age, gender and disease of recipient (although I did learn my marrow would be flown to the recipient's location). Anonymity is important because of the emotional toll the complete process can have on both the donor and recipient. First, there is no guarantee that the recipient will survive the chemo prior to the transplant. Second, the introduction of foreign white blood cells may cause his body to fight these cells rather than accept them (this is why matching is only 8%). In other words, the donor's white blood cells could literally kill the recipient. I was told we could write each other through the NMDP and they would remove anything that might provide more identification information than allowed. When I made a decision to write the boy, I had no idea the effect it would have on me. With every sentence I wrote, I became very emotional thinking about the impact I would have on him.

On the day of the surgery (Thursday), I showed up around 5:30am and was surprisingly not very nervous. Since the surgery was at a trauma center, I was luckily taken into pre-op on time. After getting prepped, I was taken to surgery with family walking along side until we hit the operating room. Upon waking in the recovery room, I just remember being thirsty with a little bit of a sore throat. The nurse gave me ice chips which was heaven! I then was taken to another room where my wife and mom waited, and my vitals were checked. Soon, I was cleared and given the option of riding in a wheel chair or walking to the car. I don't know if it was the anesthesia or will power, but I was definitely walking. How amazing is that! I literally WALKED out of the hospital after having needles put into both hips.

After arriving home, I had a little nausea but never got sick. I was excited to find out that by 12:30 my bone marrow was already on a plane and on its way to the recipient. I slept for a couple of hours, ate soup for dinner, and occasionally walked around the house. By the next morning, I was hungry for solid food and waited for the anesthesia to wear off and for the pain to begin. Luckily it never came, and I didn't need my pain meds as often as prescribed, but I did take one in the late morning and then another later on that evening. By Saturday morning, my pain was minimal, and I had a full range of motion taking only over the counter pain meds. I felt like I could do anything but go for a jog. I was literally lifting and going up and down the stairs (not that I am recommending doing this).

Sunday and today, Monday, as I write this letter I feel the same way. I don't want to say there is no pain, but it is certainly nothing compared to the knee surgery I had in college. I can feel a little pain when in motion, but if I sit or lie, I don't feel any pain at all. By the way, I took an Aleve and went to work today. I have a feeling I will continue to take Aleve for the next week or so, but I don't see needing anything stronger. Both Arlene and my surgeon told me I would be doing fine in a couple of days. I honestly thought they were just trying to put me at ease. But it was the absolute truth. The whole bone marrow story about being extremely painful is completely false probably due to how the procedure used to be done and a similar procedure that often gets confused with it. Not long ago the bone marrow transplant process was done without general anesthesia and bone marrow biopsies are still done with minimal pain management and no general anesthesia. When all said and done, I missed 3 days of work, one for the day I had my lab tests and the other two for the surgery.

I found out on Friday NMDP will give me information about my recipient's current status in about 4 weeks. They will tell me whether he is doing fine, still in same condition or has passed on. I ask all of you to pray the transplant will help this little boy beat HLH.

During this process, many people have said what a wonderful thing it is that I have done. I'm the lucky one who was a match for a 12 year old boy that needed some help, and I honestly can't imagine anyone not doing it.

In conclusion, let's look at the pros and cons. I only missed 3 days of work and have a couple of weeks of minor aches, yet I was given the opportunity to save someone's life! Even though it is NMDP's policy for a donor to give twice in a lifetime, I would do it as many times as needed.

Twice Lost - A McGinnis Tooth Saga

This story is for sure a keeper. We always have funny stuff happening at our house, but this one was one of our better "McGinnis" moments. Hope you enjoy!

Last night while gumming at a huge slice of watermelon, Alex lost her 8th baby tooth. (Yes, she is only 5.) She just lets them hang on forever. So when it came out, she actually thought it was one of the white seeds that you sometimes find in watermelon. So we all 3 giggled and finished dinner. Alex put her tooth on the table, Billie proceeded to clear the table and Alex and I began eating cherry popsicles for dessert.

When Billie came to clear the plate with the watermelon rind on it, he got worried that maybe the tooth was on the plate with the seeds. We showed him it was on the table and we all went about our business.

Alex and I then started talking about what happens when kids lose their tooth before the tooth fairy comes...does she still leave a dollar? Alex suggested that she probably did since the tooth fairy has televisions to watch all the kids like the elves do at the North Pole. (Of, course...why didn't I think of that?)

So once again, Alex and I go back to enjoying our popsicles when Billie then comes over and wipes the watermelon juice off the table...Alex and I immediately gasp...Billie wiped the tooth off the table (even though we had just had a minor freak out of the thought of losing it) and the tooth is now lost.

I can't help myself and start laughing until tears come out of the corners of my eyes. Billie is on all 4's trying to find it...Alex is trying to stay calm, but given that she is my daughter...she is beginning to get a little worked up.

Billie looked for the tooth for probably 15 minutes. In the meantime, Alex has a little fit..."just forget about it," "she won't come now, but it doesn't matter" and the proceeds to write and give us this note and tells us that this will just have to do.

The twice lost tooth was found after about 20 minutes of Alex's ranting, Billie's searching and my laughing...under the refrigerator. Good times! (And yes, there was a $1 on the nightstand this morning.)

Guess they must be updating a bit since she is now 5 going on 6! I had completely forgotten about these, but so glad they ended up at my house. She used to be the BEST handwasher...now not so much.

All summer, I have been waiting for Billie to build me a raised garden plot. We are putting it in our neighbors (Dave and Robyn's) backyard and sharing it with them. We decided to put it over there because the last time I tried a "salsa garden" the dogs jumped my little fence and ate my tomatos, peppers and onions. So...Alex and I have been babying these plants so far this summer and they are about to explode out of the pots. (These pictures were taken a couple of weeks ago.) Last summer, you may remember we put the gate in between our house's so that we can easily go back and forth.

Billie and Dave are finally going to make our garden this weekend. Let's hope I have enough of a green thumb like my mom to have a successful transplant of our goods!

Having another 1st at our house this year. Alex has decided that she doesn't want to visit Santa. She has decided that a letter is the way to go. I am not surprised since she is constantly writing in her "journals." However, I am a little disappointed. I thought seeing Santa lasted a few more years. I had visions of the dress she would wear and everything. Oh well - guess it is just another example of my baby growing up.

BTW - this was going to be our Christmas card picture before I decided that I was sending New Year's cards. The "believe" is actually spray painted on a wall in Bricktown. I thought it was perfect for Christmas!

It has been a while since I have felt my last "thrisis."

With my birthday money, I got some hair extensions. I did this for two reasons...it made my hair a little longer and it added color to hide the *gray* without coloring. They lasted ONE week to the day before they started sliding out. Went back for repair work, she said it was common to "shed" some after having them put in. (they are attached by beads, not glue) One week later and it began again. So on Tuesday night I had Billie get the pliers and remove what were left. Money well spent, huh?

Last night I did a box color...it is so-so. Billie says you can't see the gray...that it looks blonde. I am sure that is true, but I KNOW IT IS THERE!

We are working on getting our Christmas decorations up also. I decided that since we never get any Christmas cards, I am going to send New Years cards this year. BUT only to those who send me a Christmas card. I always spend quite a bit of money and time doing them...and never get many in return. We had our annual Fall session with Angel on Sunday. We decided to do the “urban” theme this year and headed to Bricktown in downtown OKC for our shoot. I think we pulled it off too. There are some pretty cute pictures…Alex was quite the cheesy ham for this session… I hadn’t realized just how much Alex and I are beginning to favor each other until seeing these. It is amazing to see in some of the pictures the same expressions, the way we tilt our heads, etc. (and at the same time at that!)

Several of you know her and have even used her. I am so thankful that Donnell and her husband got married so that Billie and I could become acquainted with Angel, her admiring husband Dusty and their wonderful daughter Auburn.

Angel told me yesterday that this session...4 years ago...was her first "official" session of her career. I love her and her work! I really liked Hillary's idea of having Tuesday be a little "tidbit" about our tiny friends. I don't want to forget all the fun and cute things that Alex says and does, so I am really going to try to remember and make time to note a few things each week.

"The Needles"
So as many of you know, Billie is very into his music. He has several bands that I think would qualify him as being obsessed about (hence, Alex's middle name Morrison, after Jim Morrison.)

Due to my work schedule changing, he picks Alex up each day and God only knows what he is letting her listen to. We were in her room one evening and she was naming off the bands that she and daddy like to listen to...The Black Crowes, The Doors, Foo Fighters.

Alex then looks up at Billie and says...and we really like The Needles.

We look at eachother...so Billie starts guessing... Nine Inch Nails? Neil Young?

No that band that they really like is "The Beatles."

Alex and I are super excited that Fall is FINALLY here! We made pumpkin bread on Friday night and painted/glittered pumpkins on Saturday. Yesterday we got all the halloween/fall decor out and got after it! Can't wait for our annual trip to the pumpkin patch to find "the great pumpkin" this year!!!

Well, this week I thought I would flashback to last week while we were home recouping from the tonsilectomy. We tried to keep Alex busy with quiet activities...for the most part, we kept her busy. However, as I mentioned in a previous blog, I did catch her doing toe touches on my bed one day. I guess you just can't keep a good woman down! (WINK!)

I took Alex to the Public Library to get her very 1st Library Card!
We checked out two DVD's and 7 books!

The 2 pictures above were taken on the day that Billie stayed home with her and let her eat 18 FREAKIN POPSICLES! (And she wondered why her poop was blue-green the next day!)

We finished up the week with a trip to Disney on Ice.

We made friendship bracelets!

She got in trouble - just one example above of her "creative" spirit!

We made popsicle puppets with the 18 popsicle sticks...

And we used glitter glue on paper plates...I know...fun stuff!

I have all the patience in the world with Alexandra.

I have pretty good patience with family and close friends.

However, I find it very hard to have patience in the workplace.

I am an anal, type A person (in a thrisis) ... and even though being irresponsible seems appealing...I know that I wouldn't be happy. However, it would be nice to be "bad" for once.

Update on My Baby!

Here is a picture of Alexandra in recovery after having her tonsils removed on Friday. Her adenoids also had some regrowth, so they removed them again as well. She is doing really well so far. Eating great - food and popsicles. As long as we stay with the pain medicine around the clock as prescribed...she is in pretty good spirits. The "death breath" has started and it looks nasty in there, but she is really getting along well. Of course, you know she is never quiet (wonder where she gets that?) and this situation is no exception. Billie and I both stayed home on the day of the surgery. I have taken Monday, Wednesday and Friday off and Billie has taken Tuesday and Thursday off. I caught her doing toe touches on my bed yesterday...the rest of week may be a real challenge keep her "calm." Thanks for all the positive thoughts and prayers!

Thrisis Thursday

Ok, so I have found myself in a thrisis. I have known for a while that this was going on, but some things at my work this week have completely brought it all to a head. I actually cried for the 1st in 8 years at work this week. I am not a crier and no I am not pregnant.

A thrisis isn't about regret, but about looking forward and thinking, I don't want the next 30 years to look like this.

So I have come to the conclusion that I am going to quit griping everyday and on Thursday's, you get to hear my random thoughts/gripes on life, the week, turning 34, etc. (Aren't you lucky!) I think it might make me feel better to vent to the computer? Feel free to comment...here's hoping that this will be some sort of meditation for me.

I like to watch Sex in the City on TBS every night. Do I really like it? Or do I yearn for a group of girl friends like the 4 of them?
I listen to the Disney channel even when Alex isn't in the car - I truly like some of the songs.
I live two different lives...at work I am organized and completely on top of things. (to the point of being anal) At home I am a total mess! I am 2 years behind on my filing, my house is dirty and do you know what I do before we have company? I bag everything that is in piles on my counter tops and put the stuff in grocery bags and stuff it in my closet. How terrible is that? I know, I know, the secret it out.
I have a couple of age spots on my face and hands. Yuck.

I took Alex to the brand new splash pad in Norman this afternoon. It opened yesterday and will stay open each weekend in September before closing. The best part of the new splash pad is the location...1.0 miles from my drive way to the park. (and a covered, shaded area for mom to sit!) Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Girls trip this weekend! Alex is at work with me today...headed to Woodward for the weekend. We are going to the Rodeo with Mom, Dad and Will (like the cowgirl pics?) and planning to check out the new waterpark. Have a great weekend!

2009 T-Ball Report

Alex was "that" kid who cried if she didn't get the ball everytime. I told her to get in there and get rough with the boys...she replied, "I don't want to hurt them." Too sweet.

She chewed on her glove just like Billie does...neither one realizes that they are doing it.

We had a great 1st season with T-ball at the Cleveland County YMCA. Everyone plays and no one wins. Some teams are better than others, but everyone bats...last batter runs the bases and then you field. Now we did have a tackler on our team, so by the end of the season, Billie would have them take turns getting the ball and throwing it to 1st. It was fun to watch them, but you could tell that by the end of the game...the focus was pretty much gone. Laying down, picking flowers, etc. They bat twice and field twice and they were ready for snacks usually after about 30 minutes. It was a great 1st experience and Coach Billie was awesome! I love my coach and player!!!!

Alex did a fantastic job at her recital and we were so proud of her. As of today, she plans to take dance again starting in the Fall. The DVD from the recital came last week and I can't even begin to count how many times we have watched it. She may learn every dance on there before the end of summer. Love this little girl!

As you can imagine, around trade show time, I get totally behind on everything. I am making it my goal to get caught up this week on everything I need to share.

The day after Alex's dance recital...she lost her second tooth. (Actually she pulled this one.)

Currently she keeps informing me that she has two more loose teeth - she is only four!!! She may not have any left before too long!

Alex and Billie always take the trade show day off and come see me and all my hard work on the show. I have to check in downtown at the Convention hotel all week long...so by show day...we are all needing a little fix!

As many of you know, I work for an association and have planned the annual trade show and convention for the last 8 years. It is a huge undertaking and takes up about 80% of my year. I lay it out, sell the booths, negotiate all the contracts, etc.

Well, this year, our June trade show was my very last to coordinate and manage. I can't tell you how happy I am!!!! The trade show is changing some (we are adding another association to the mix) and my co-worker, Connie is retiring after 30 years with the association - can you imagine? So I will be picking up her work along with everything else I do - other than the trade show. It is being outsourced and I just can't tell you what a relief it is!

Bride Kiss!

Well, just when I think Alex has said it all...she pulled a new one on me last night.

We were watching Wow, Wow Wubsy and getting ready to get in the tub when Alex turned to me and asked me if I wanted a "bride kiss." Well, like you, I wondered what in the 4 year old world could a "bride kiss" be.

I told her I would take a "bride kiss" and this is what I got:

Her hands on each side of my face,
Her lips pursed
Her lips touching my lips
And then...she moved her head from side to side.

I about wet my pants laughing. I can assure you that Billie and I DO NOT kiss like that and I'm pretty sure that she didn't get it from Wow Wow Wubsy either. I asked her if she had "bride kissed" anyone and she just shook her head and smiled. I told her to keep those "bride kisses" to herself for when she is a bride someday...it was super cute!

The Tooth Fairy is Coming - TONIGHT!

The 1st tooth has just been hanging on. We tried to pull it last night, but it didn't happen. Alex got out of her bath tonight and it just fell out. The tooth fairy is coming tonight! My baby is not a baby anymore - what a big girl! Her tooth went in this little porcelain box and that my grandma (Alex's great grandma) painted.

Can I say snaggle tooth? The one right next to it is also just hanging on...

Dancing Queen

Well, our 1st t-ball game was called off today due to the rain we are having. We were disappointed, but will now have a doubleheader to look forward to on May 16th! We did have our dance pictures today...here is my dancing queen as she waited to have her picture taken with the group. We had quite the "mother/daughter" morning with the hair and makeup, but all was well when we got there and she saw that she had less makeup and much "smaller" hair than most of the other girls. My paybacks have started! Have a great weekend!

Well, Alexandra and Billie had the 1st official t-ball practice last night. As you know, we not only have a player this year, but a coach as well. We are playing at the Cleveland County YMCA, so everything is very laid back, unorganized and as Billie calls it "controlled chaos."

Guess that Billie told Alex to head over in the outfield between 1st & 2nd bases last night. She yelled to him..."Ok, Coach Bolton!" For those of you who don't know...that is the Coach's name on High School Musical. Guess it was pretty funny stuff. Our 1st game is this Saturday...can't wait to see these little guys play! Wish Us Luck!

This last Saturday, Billie and I went to our good friend Noreen's 40th Birthday Party - 80's Style! Billie went as Texas Bud (Urban Cowboy) and I was very "attractive" in a one piece, purple, satin suit with authentic shoulder pads. I also sported blue mascara, eyeliner and eye shadow as well as half a bottle of hairspray. We had a good time seeing friends and having a night out. Thought you might enjoy...I have know Billie since the 5th grade and this is the 1st time I have seen him in boots and wranglers. (I think his wrangler butt drives me nuts! Ha-ha!!!)

We had a really fun Easter this year! Lots of festivities leading up to Easter...including egg decorating/coloring with Auntie Allison, an Easter egg hunt and party at school, an egg hunt with Cadence and Hadlee at the Tulsa Zoo and an egg hunt at Marka & Poppers (Doug & Connie's.)
